Detour Ahead Shawl Pattern - Digital Download
by Sharyn Anhalt, GingerSnap Designs
Although this project ends as a triangle shawl, the process to get there involves a little detour! Read through the instructions and study the schematic before starting and you’ll see exactly where you are headed. This piece is knit flat, and starts as a traditional triangle shawl. Halfway through the project, you will cast off half the stitches in order to start knitting in a different direction. Project suitable for advanced beginners that are comfortable reading a pattern, and can work simple increases.
Yarn A = Hedgehog Fibres Sock, one skein (shown in color Seed)
Yarn B = Hedgehog Fibres Kidsilk Lace, one skein (shown in color Raku)
US size 6 or 7 needle, or size for gauge (see notes). Recommended length 32” to accommodate the number of stitches.
Darning needle, for weaving in ends
Finished dimensions for triangle shawl, 30” deep and 84” wingspan.
A large selection of both Hedgehog Fibres Sock and Kidsilk Lace is available at YarnScout! Choose yarn colors with a high degree of dark/light contrast between them to achieve the look shown.
A note on gauge:
Gauge = 16 sts and 28 rows over 4” in striped garter stitch. I’m suggesting two needle sizes to encourage you to consider how you tend to knit; use the size 6 if you tend to knit looser, and the 7 if you tend to be tighter. I wouldn’t knit a gauge swatch; instead just start knitting the pattern and after a few inches check your gauge. If you are too tight or loose, just undo and start over with another size needle. Gauge should be measured with your work slightly stretched; blocking will relax things a bit so by slightly stretching you will approximate your after-blocking gauge. Your fabric should be somewhat airy and light; it should not be dense and tight. If your gauge is too tight, your shawl will be much smaller than the dimensions listed.
