Join us for our first ever Scout Camp Retreat in beautiful Paradise Valley, a one-hour drive from Bozeman - 3 nights and 2 full days of fiber fun under the spectacular backdrop of the Absoroka Mountains. Our special guest for this retreat will be Beata Jezek, the founder of Hedgehog Fibres. Beata will be traveling from Ireland for this exclusive event and can’t wait to share her knitting inspirations and approach to combining colors! We’ll spend a lot of time knitting along the creek, but afternoons will be free for you to explore the area, go for a soak at Chico Hot Springs, venture into Yellowstone National Park – or just relax and knit!
The retreat will be held at the Cabins & Cottage at Old Chico near Emigrant, MT. Family style lodging (shared baths) and wholesome meals are included in the cost of the retreat; registration costs are based on different sleeping arrangements. There are some private rooms (with shared bath) as well as open concept cabins with two or more beds in a shared space. We will also have some “commuter” registrations if you want to arrange your own accommodations or plan to come each day from Bozeman or Livingston.
Each morning after breakfast, we’ll gather for a workshop featuring one of Beata’s original designs knit with Hedgehog yarns. We’ll have plenty of yarn samples for you to try, and Beata will share some of her favorite tips and tricks for fading, marling, and choosing colors that will make your project one of a kind. There will be no formal classes (no homework, no pressure!) as we are planning this retreat to be relaxing and restful. After lunch, more knitting of course – or take a hike in the mountains and explore the area. We’ll be sending lots of information on activities in the area once you are registered. We’ll gather again for dinner, then more knitting! Later on, you can enjoy an evening campfire or head out to Chico Hot Springs for live music.

Applications for registration will be accepted through January 26th. There is no charge to apply; simply complete this application form which will be automatically emailed to us. We are expecting a high demand and have a limited number of spots, so registrants will be drawn by lottery, based on lodging preferences. If you are traveling with a friend and want to share a space or a bed, your friend must also complete an application. There are some shared bed arrangements offered at a lower registration cost, but we will never have you share a bed without your permission.
We will notify everyone by February 1st if their application was drawn, or if you are on the wait list. If you receive a spot, payment is required no later than February 18, 2019. If spots open up, we will contact people on the wait list.
All lodging options have shared bathrooms. There are just 3 private bedrooms, all other rooms or cabins have multiple beds. There are lower rates if you share a bed; but we will never put you in a shared bed unless it is someone you know. The largest cottage has gathering spaces both inside and out, where we will spend most of our time. The cottage kitchen will be used to prepare and serve meals. The bathrooms in the cottage will be shared with all retreat attendees during the day. The retreat set up is not like a hotel, but instead family style.

Is this my only opportunity to meet Beata?
No! We’ll be holding a meet & greet event at YarnScout in Bozeman on July 3rd, more info soon.
Where is the nearest airport?
Most major airlines fly into Bozeman Montana. You will need to rent a car to travel to the retreat location. If you are interested in sharing a car with another attendee, add a note to your application and we can put you in touch with them.
How should I plan my schedule if I want to also attend the meet & greet in Bozeman on July 3rd?
Our suggestion for the ideal trip would be to fly or drive to Bozeman on July 2nd, explore Bozeman and attend the YarnScout event on July 3rd. Drive to the retreat on July 4th, check in at the retreat is 5pm. Checkout for the retreat is 10:30am on July 7th.
May I bring my spouse or family?
Due to the limited space we can’t accommodate non-knitting attendees or pets at the retreat, but there are lots of activities in the area to keep them busy while you knit! If traveling with non-knitters, you may want to select a commuter retreat registration and then stay with your family at nearby lodging. Chico Hot Springs and Sage Resort are both nearby, although they fill up quickly.
What is the accessibility at the event?
All of the cabins and the cottage have stairs, and one queen bed is accessed by a ladder to a loft. Walking surfaces (roads, trails) are not paved and can be uneven. We are happy to work with anyone who may need assistance, but please understand due to the remote location and older structures, modern ADA facilities are not available.
What should we bring?
The weather in Montana can be chilly in the mornings and evening, so long pants and a sweater are advised. Summer days can be hot, so plan for cool clothing during the day. Bring a swimsuit if you plan to soak at Chico, and hiking boots/shoes if that’s your thing. We also suggest bringing a re-useable water bottle; you’ll want to stay hydrated, and we would like to avoid using plastic bottled water. Sunscreen and sunhat may come in handy; the elevation and dry air can intensify sun exposure. At night, a flashlight or headlamp may be needed if walking between cabins. And, don’t forget your knitting bag!
May we bring beer, wine, etc?
Yes, of course. But for liability reasons we will not be providing any alcoholic beverages. Please drink responsibly and respect that others may not wish to do so.
What if I’m gluten free or vegetarian?
No problem, but please let us know on the application form if you have any food allergies or dietary restrictions. We can plan meals around most needs, and are happy to work with you.
My time is tight, and I won’t make it to the Bozeman event on the 3rd. Will I still be able to buy some Hedgehog yarn?
Yes! We will have a small selection of Hedgehog yarn at the retreat, plus extra needles and a swift and ball winder for use. You can also place an order through the website and we’ll deliver it to you at the retreat.
Why are there so many different prices for the retreat?
We’ve structured the prices based on the size of the beds and how the sleeping spaces are shared. For example, the private queen rooms (with shared bath) are the highest price since you don’t share a sleeping space. You’ll be able to indicate your choices on the application form. The shared beds are only for people that know each other; each person must fill out an application form and indicate they are willing to share a bed with the other person.
What is the cancellation policy?
Cancellation prior to April 30, 2019 will receive a refund, less a $50 administration fee. Cancellations after April 30th may be partially refunded if we can fill your spot.
